2019…

…Will be a year of transition. Expect the chaos to continue to rule. But by the end of 2019 the future will start coming into focus. 2018 was the year of streaming. Yes, Spotify launched in the U.S. nearly a decade ago, and YouTube before that, but it took that long for the public to catch up with the new paradigm, never mind the business. Remember how long it took CDs to become the standard? At first they were overpriced and rare, then AOL was giving them away and there was only one good track on a disc and Napster happened. But do not expect disruption of streaming. Streaming represents on demand, once you’ve reached it there is nothing after. Furthermore, in the future, we will own less and less, millennials live in smaller places, if you’re all about ownership you’re a Luddite left behind, did you read Dan Neil’s piece Saturday in the WSJ? He said not to buy an internal combustion engine automobile now because it will be worth nothing in five years. Argue with me, that’s fine, bu...

Louis CK Audio Emerges, Receives Media Condemnation

NEW YORK (CelebrityAccess) Louis C.K., who took some time off from his red-hot comedy career after he admitted to sexual misconduct, has been reemerging at small comedy clubs to rehearse material, and a recent audio of one has been condemned by the media. Louis C.K. has made his surprise appearances with the audience having been told to not record the material but, apparently, someone did and his show at the Comedy Cellar in Long Island, N.Y., Dec. 16 has been uploaded to, then removed from, YouTube and portions of it to Twitter. In it, Louis C.K. Riffs on various forms of political correctness, which has been a longtime shtick. For instance, in the past, he has a routine where he talks about the use of the N-word, the term f****t and the term c**t with the callback using them all in one sentence . Apparently he uses similar terms in a Dec.16 routine but it doesn’t work, at least for Slate . “Whatever you think about C.K.’s past use of slurs in his act, his old material at least ma...

Advice All Music Writers Should Follow In 2019

( Hypebot ) As another year turns over, the music business has become unrecognizable from how it was almost 20 years ago, where the value of music journalists and their role in the industry has been called into question. Here we look at how music writers can best navigate this rocky new landscape moving into 2019. ________________________________ Guest post from  Haulix Daily The music business in 2019 would be virtually unrecognizable to the music business of 2000. In less than two decades the industry we all love has undergone an extensive transformation that has emphasized access rather than ownership, created a glut of festivals, and brought into question the necessity of quote/unquote ‘music journalists.’ When algorithms can predict success better than even the most gifted ears, and everyone with an opinion can share their thoughts on social media do we have a need for full-time music writers? The answer, as always, is yes. There may be more people talking about music th...

(CelebrityAccess) – Aretha Franklin’s estate has paid at least $3 million in back taxes to the IRS since her passing in August, according to the Associated Press. The IRS filed the claim this month in Oakland County Probate Court in Pontiac. Earlier this week, TMZ reported that legal documents it obtained showed the IRS claimed the singer owes more than $6.3 million in back taxes from 2012 to 2018 and $1.5 million in penalties. David Bennett, attorney for Franklin’s estate, told AP that the estate was being audited by the IRS in connection to a dispute over what each party claimed was income. He went on to suggest that Franklin’s touring expenses from the period in question––things like transportation, hotel rooms, backup singers, and musicians––should be seen as “double-dipping income” and therefore not taxable under the same terms as the singer’s regular income. Bennett also told AP that the dispute stems from the fact that the IRS doesn’t “understand how the [music] bu...
