Dumbo’s Disappointing Debut Still Tops The Weekend Box Office

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) — “Dumbo,” the latest live-action remake of an animated classic, took the top spot at the box office this weekend but fell short of analysts’ estimates.

Dumbo opened to $45 million in North American theaters and $116 million worldwide, despite tepid reviews, according to estimates compiled by Box Office Pro.

Based on the beloved 1941 animated feature, the modern incarnation of Dumbo was directed by veteran filmmaker Tim Burton and features Colin Farrell, Michael Keaton, Eva Green, and Danny DeVito.

While its debut was lower than many analysts had predicted, Dumbo still managed to unseat last week’s number one film, Jordan Peele’s Us, which slid to second place in domestic theaters, earning $32 million.

Also opening this weekend was the controversial abortion-themed religious drama Unplanned, which opened to a respectable $5.2 million.
