TV, Movie Producer And MTV Video Trailblazer Steve Golin Dies

LOS ANGELES (CelebrityAccess) Steve Golin, 64, one of the most decorated producers in Hollywood, died after a long battle with cancer in Los Angeles April 21.

Golin is the Oscar-winning producer behind “The Revenant” and “Spotlight” as well as earning two Golden Globes in 2016 for best dramatic film (“The Revenant”) and best TV drama (“Mr. Robot” – starring Rami Malek, who would go on to an Oscar-winning portrayal of Freddie Mercury in “Bohemian Rhapsody”).

He also was the catalyst behind movies such as “The Game,” “Wild At Heart,” best picture nominee “Babel,” “Being John Malkovich, and “Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind.”

In 1986, Golen and fellow American Film Institute alum Joni Sighvatsson launched Propaganda Films, which became the world’s largest production company for music videos and commercials at the height of MTV’s powerful influence. It was around that time when he produced most of Tears For Fears’ videos, among others.

At Anonymous, he is credited with launching the careers of Spike Jonze, David Fincher, Michael Bay, Antoine Fuqua, and Alfonso Cuaron, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Golin and Sighvatsson sold 49 percent to PolyGram in 1989 and the remainder three years later. In 1999, Golin created Anonymous Content, which would eventually have 70 employees and a client list that now includes Emma Stone, Samuel L. Jackson, and Alfonso Cuaron. Anonymous packaged hit shows like HBO’s Emmy-winning “True Detective” and USA Network’s “Mr. Robot,” among others.

“He was a trailblazer in the industry, a devoted colleague, a remarkable leader and a truly kind man,” his partners at Anonymous said in a statement. “He was a rare individual who encompassed intense creativity with a keen business mind. Above all, Steve showed us the power of kindness and generosity. His compassion was unparalleled. He led by example and inspired each and every one of us to be better. In his life and in his work, Steve created a family — he meant the world to many of us and will leave a lasting impression on our lives. Together, we will continue to build upon the immense legacy Steve has left us.”
